Themes of Training

ECOSYSTEM-BASED APPROACH TO FISHERIES MANAGEMENT

The application of a ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management is an overarching theme of this leadership workshop. The purpose is to plan, develop and manage fisheries in a manner that addresses the multiple needs and desires of society without jeopardizing the options for future generations to benefit from the full range of goods and services provided by the marine ecosystem.

Leadership

The course builds leadership for transformational change at the individual through societal levels. As we move away from the failed fisheries paradigm of increasing effort, diminishing economic return and overfished stocks, a new vision of fishing is emerging -of catching less fish with greater value, less effort, and less habitat alteration. Leadership is needed to shift from short- to long-term views, and to acknowledge that fish resources are limited yet renewable, fish and fishermen can co-exist, we are linked in the global food supply network and ecosystems are the scale for management.

Team Work

Team building is a major benefit of the three-week course experience. Working effectively in teams, leading teams, communicating and networking among teams are essential skills if we are to have more sustainable fisheries worldwide. It is highly recommended that countries teams attend the training, to take advantage of a rare focused opportunity to work together, live together and learn together; then have the critical mass to support one another in applying new information and approaches to their work upon their return home. Participants will leave with a deeper level of appreciation of their own talents and those of their colleagues, practical skills in teamwork, personal growth and a deep bonding with other participants that is remarkable.

Purpose of Course

This course is for individuals who are actively engaged in fisheries management or for individuals whose work is increasingly affected by the issues of overfishing, biodiversity losses, ecosystem changes, food security and poverty.

The purpose of this course overall is to assist you in developing a plan of action for bringing about changes in fisheries management. You and your team will have several weeks to develop this plan, based on exercises provided during the sessions. You will present this to the group on the last day of the course.

Proficiency in reading, speaking and writing English is required. Lectures, field exercises, small group work, simulations and case studies create a robust interactive dynamic to learn new insights and skills for managing fisheries more sustainably.

Venue

The course takes place at the URI Bay Campus conference facilities on beautiful Narragansett Bay. URI is a 2-hour drive from Boston, 3 hours from New York City and is accessible by train and bus service. It is a 45-minute drive from Providence Airport.

Fees

Registration for this course is USD$5,000 which covers the cost of tuition, housing, class lunches, field trips, reading materials, special events, and limited health and accident insurance (if needed). Fees do not cover personal expenses, breakfast or dinner meals or the cost of travel to and from Rhode Island.
